Day 46: Almost 10 pounds!

Next up, 5 kilos
Today was our final well-baby check. Brandt weighs 9 pounds 14 ounces (4.1 kilograms)--woo hoo! Meeting a 10 pound 3 ounce 3 week-old baby on our way out did not burst our bubble.

Day 45: The baby in the mirror

The baby in the mirror's smiling, too!
I apologize for the blurry picture, but it's the best smiling Brandt picture to date. We're playing his favorite game (after flirting with the window blinds, that is): The Baby in the Mirror. Sometimes he stares at the baby in the mirror and sometimes he prefers the mommy in the mirror.
I can't take credit for inventing the game...I've caught Brandt staring at the reflection of the window blinds in the turned-off TV screen a few times so he's the mastermind.

Day 44: Back to work

Now where did I put my Blackberry...
After the fastest six weeks in the history of the world, I'm back at work. Brandt was a sweetheart and slept all day so I could focus. Multitasking is just not as easy as it used to be!
The bib in the picture is a failed experiment in the spitup containment department. Brandt has too much trouble getting his fingers past the bib up to his mouth so we'll stick with swapping wet shirts for dry shirts rather than wet bibs for dry bibs.

Day 43: Brandt loses his shirt

High roller
Forty-three days old and Brandt finally makes it to the casino. And busted out. We quickly lost a buck playing video poker, but you gotta start somwhere.
The shirtlessness is really just a spitup-inspired outfit change. Brandt didn't even notice being undressed and redressed--he was mesmerized by something during lunch, but there are no window blinds at Panera so I'm not sure what he was staring at. All in all, it was a good outing...even the fifteen minute walk home in almost 100 degree heat wasn't too bad.

Day 42: Aunt Renae taught me to smile!

Chillin' like a villain
Renae and Jason have been in town for three days now and I think Brandt senses they know much more about babies than I. He's gotten very good at making eye contact and he's smiling a lot! He mainly smiles at Renae and I have a feeling that when he smiles at me, he's thinking about Renae, but I'll take what I can get!

Day 41: Back to the bar

Make mine a double
We headed back to last night's bar for burgers today. Brandt snoozed comfortably on the seat between Dan and me. Brandt didn't miss out by sleeping the whole time; we were there at lunchtime and the day shift waitresses don't have the big boobs of the night shift which would have impressed Brandt.

Day 40: Baby's first bar crawl

Aunt Renae and Uncle Jason came for a visit from Virginia and Brandt insisted on showing them the town. OK, so we really just had a drink in the bar area of an adjacent restaurant while waiting for our table and then Brandt and I bailed after dinner. But Brandt was an excellent restaurant patron and didn't make a peep. He even snoozed in his car seat for 30 minutes when we got back home so I could take care of some housework and blogwork...and take dozens of pictures of him sleeping and waking up.

Day 39: Happy bath

See, I like my bath!
Just wanted to offer proof that the mouse usually likes baths. All cooing, no crying today. Dan has requested no full-frontal baby nudity so here's hoping a blurred-out groin is OK by him...

Day 38: As promised, the swimsuit competition

Point me to the beach
No swimming today, but I stuck Brandt in his swim trunks for a giggle. And it wasn't too hot to go outside for a few minutes to play and take pictures.

Swimming in his shorts
Hopefully we can visit the beach again soon. It's such a shame he slept in his sling the whole time we were in Santa Monica so he couldn't show them off.

Day 37: Chunky Monkey

I haven't weighed him recently, but Brandt is really filling out! I noticed dimples on his knees for the first time today. And I love how his chest makes little pointy man boobs when he slouches over...Dan, however, does not share this opinion.

Day 36: Five week D/B comparison

Dan at five weeks

Brandt at five weeks

I don't think Brandt has started looking like baby Danny yet. Yesterday my dad brought out some old photo albums and Dan thinks he looks like me...or at least, more like me than like my brother.
I think the comparisons will get more exciting as Brandt gets bigger. At least when he's grown more hair I can mimic Dan's hairdos to help level the playing field.

Day 35: Hooray for Hollywood

Diva baby: I refuse to open my eyes for less than $10,000
Apparently I did ruin our karma yesterday because I had the worst nightmare last night: I had to go somewhere without the baby so I dropped him off at Britney Spears's for babysitting. I hadn't thought about food, but she kindly offered to nurse him herself. This was the pre-shaven head, pre-rehab Britney, but still! Talk about scary.
We hit the Hollywood Farmers' Market first thing in the morning (a.k.a. 10:30). I expected to see more babies in slings there since the place is teeming with hippies, but it was stroller central. However, we did see 1 ergo, 1 wrap, 1 pouch, and two bjorns. The gal at the coffee shop asked if my sling contained a puppy, vegetables, or a baby.
Brandt took a picture next to Lassie's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to bring home to show Lyle and Bettie. We also took a pic at Kevin Bacon's star so Brandt's now only one degree separated from Kevin Bacon. Not many 5 week olds can say that!

Day 34: First road trip

Throwing down gang signs on the Santa Monica pier. West coast representin'
We took Brandt on his first trip this weekend, to Los Angeles, and it went well! We met up with Uncle Alex and Aunt Emilie at the Santa Monica pier so Brandt could see the ocean for the first time. I'll post a picture of his ridiculously puffy swim trunks some day soon, but since he slept in the sling the whole time we were there, they didn't get to see the light of day.
He was also a well-behaved little angel at Musso & Frank's Grill (well, until it was time to leave, but talk about perfect timing!) and apparently we didn't ruin our celebrity spotting karma when we declined to be filmed being interviewed by "one of the country's top CEOs who wants to ask you questions about working" on the pier because we dined three tables away from The Rock, Dwayne Johnson.

Day 33: Bad bath

This is not my idea of fun!
Looks like I jinxed myself with all that talk about baths yesterday. But I wanted pictures of a wet baby today so here they are, for better or worse. It wasn't really the bath that upset him...he was fussy right before the bath and I should have known better than to douse him. I consider today a win: he's taught me a valuable lesson about mixing bad moods and baths.

I am so outta here!
Brandt's tear ducts started working this week, right on schedule, but that means that now when he cries his eyes get wet and it's that much more heart-wrenching.

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Day 32: Naked day

I might be peeing right now
Brandt spent a good portion of today naked. It's easy to forget just how cute and squeezable his baby butt is when it's covered up all day long. Plus, I figure this is good practice for bath time--getting used to being naked and dry can only make being naked and wet a bit less unfamiliar. He tolerated his last two baths well, but no point resting on our laurels.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Day 31: Separation anxiety

First of all, I got Brandt in his bouncey seat without biting him with the clasp (I neglected to admit that the day after I gave him his first boo boo, I bit him on the side of his stomach since I was too focused on not biting him on the leg!).
I momentarily entertained the idea of weaning myself from Brandt and incorporating more bouncey seat time in our day rather than holding him 24/7, but I've had second thoughts. Maybe it won't be too hard once his newness wears off and I'll be able to let go for an hour at a time, but for now he's just too fun to hold onto nonstop.

Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Day 30: Love bite

Don't you look tasty?
Well, the doctor said he had a strong suck and now the proof is visible! Brandt gave his arm a hickey today. I think it probably happened while he was climbing up Dan's shoulder in search of a nipple.

Day 29: First dog walk

Gimme the leash
We dropped Dan off at the airport early this morning and since we were home and awake at 7:00 a.m. and it was only 70 degrees out, I figured it was about time we sorted out the logistics of a dog walk. I haven't walked the dogs since Brandt's birthday and, needless to say, they did not give me a Mother's Day present yesterday.
It worked out really well so hopefully I can get back to my old schedule of waking up with the dogs at 6:30 and we'll resume walking every morning. Lyle's been thoughtful enough to put on a bit of weight to help me remember how neglectful I'm being.

Sunday, May 13, 2007

Day 28: Happy Mother's Day

Aww, mom!
Today was the best Mother's Day. Brandt got me flowers, a parenting book, and a ham and cheese sandwich. It's only been a month, but he already knows me so well!

Day 27: Brandt + window blinds = true love

What's happening, hot stuff?
Supposedly, babies' favorite things to look at are human faces, with black and white checkerboard patterns coming in a close second. However, Brandt seems to prefer the window blinds to anything else. It's the same concept as the checkboards...he likes the contrast of the light coming through the slats.
Dan holds Brandt on his chest in the man chair every evening and while Brandt sometimes snoozes, he usually crawls/wiggles up to Dan's shoulder to get closer to the blinds. Below is a peek at the mouse flirting with his favorite gal.

Day 26: Mobile mouse

Brandt is majorly on the move these days! We were promised a little blob that would spend the first three months doing nothing but eating and sleeping so we're unprepared for the pseudo-crawling.
I like to set Brandt on the bathroom floor while I shower so he can partake of the steam (it is so incredibly dry here!) and today I opted to set him on his tummy. (There's a glass door on the shower so I can watch him the whole time.) Before I was half done with my shower he had scooted the entire length of the 36 inch pad and onto the bare floor. I hopped out and put him back at the far edge of the mat, but from now on he might have to go back to suffering through naked-baby-steam-room-time on his back (the mouse doesn't like being on his back when he's awake) and risk peeing on himself.
We ran into the chiropractor this evening at the monthy Birthyear Network meeting and she commented on how muscle-y his little legs are. Woo hoo...future Tour de France winner big time. He also likes to grip my finger with his toes, but I don't know how that will help him in the future.

Day 25: Big Brandt

Brandt had a well-baby check today and clocked in at 8 pounds 3 ounces! And he's grown 3/4 of an inch, too. He's proper baby size now. Hopefully this means he'll fit into his 0-3 clothing soon.
On the drive to the midwife's he got a bit angry, but I was able to finally calm him down by finding his favorite radio station. I tried a couple staticky stations, but apparently the fuzzy music coming through ruined the experience. As soon as I tuned to 89.1's pure static, Brandt chilled out.
Now that he's such a big boy, Brandt gets to sit in Dan's "man chair" all by himself. This picture was taken shortly before he spit up in said man chair (shh...we haven't told Dan and he's sitting in the chair right now...heh heh. I guess the wet spot has since dried).

Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Day 24: Bathing beauty

I suspected Brandt wouldn't enjoy a real bath so I've been sponge bathing him until now. Yesterday I attempted our first real bath and my suspicions proved true. Needless to say, I didn't pause to grab any pictures so today we did a dry run so Brandt could practice chilling in the tub and I was able to capture that moment. He's yawning, not yelling, by the way.

Day 23: Outdoor tummy time

Who is that handsome devil?
I decided to give the outdoor thing one more shot so we took the tummy time mat out to the backyard for its inaugural spin. Brandt got his head turned to the right and crawled (well, shoved himself) towards the mirror and got lost in his own reflection for 15 minutes. Baby Narcissus finally tired of the mirror and did some more head lifting/neck strengthening, but I got too hot so we moved the show back inside. Mind you, it was 6pm! I've decided to rescind my New Year's resolution not to complain about living here...or at least I'll allow weather complaints from now on.

Day 22: Brandt, the picketing street protester

I am baby, hear me snore
Our hypnobirthing instructor had her baby two days before me. She had planned on a homebirth, but near the end of her labor, the midwife discovered the baby was a double footling breech. They would have delivered at home, but the baby's heart rate wasn't ideal (turns out the cord was wrapped around her neck) so she transferred to the closest hospital for a cesarean. She wanted to take her placenta home, and although the hospital said that'd be fine at first, they ended up changing their mind.
So we met up with over a dozen other people and picketed the hospital to free the placenta today. I couldn't handle the heat so we only stayed a couple hours, but everyone else marched much longer than us and the news was even there. Brandt slept through the whole thing, but he was happy to participate and sport a "Placenta = HEALTH Not Hazard!" sign and biohazard sticker.

Day 21: Baby's first real outing

Out and about
Today was our first family outing. No doctors, no shopping, just a trip out to the neighborhood Spring Fling/Artfest. Dan and Brandt did fine, but I thought it was way too hot. Thank goodness I convinced them we should drive there rather than walk (10 minutes). According to Dan it's not even hot yet and today was, in fact, a perfect day. Whatever. I have to admit I'm a bit bummed out that Brandt will grow up used to this awful climate, rather than be exactly like me--crippled by having been raised in Southern California.
We met two babies: 6 weeks old and 9 weeks old...and they were huge! The moms claimed their babies were Brandt-sized at 3 weeks and he'll definitely grow to their babies' dimensions, but I'll have to see it to believe it.

Day 20: Lazy Saturday

Helping with the laundry
We were all so tired today! Brandt has been sleeping very well at night, but we've still all been extra tired during the day. Dan and Brandt (of course) both managed a nap today, but I'm just not a very good napper so I was a zombie all day. But like every other day, we built up a load of Brandt laundry (mostly spit up-covered, not pee-covered) so that was the one thing I got done today. Brandt hung out to help with the folding. Just look at how big he's getting! I won't be able to call him "the mouse" much longer.

Day 19: First boo-boo

I broke the baby today :(
I finally got the nerve up to clip his nails a few days ago (I'd been using a baby nail file--not very successfully--before then) and didn't draw any blood, but today all I tried to do was test out one of his bouncey seats and somehow bit his leg with the harness. The good news is that his cries didn't mean he hates the bouncey seat, but I'm too scared to try it again! I know, I's just like that awesome episode of CHiPs when Ponch crashes his bike and Jon lectures him on the importance of getting back on. But I'll cheat and make Dan give it a go tonight.

Day 18: Baby's first airport run

Papa's going where in what?
Yesterday afternoon we found out Dan has to fly to Reno for the day today, so it's a good thing Brandt and I got that first solo trip under our belts. Dropping Dan off at the airport was no big deal.
Even more impressive than Brandt and me bravely driving alone again was all three of us waking up and getting ready to leave the house by 5am! Brandt didn't even wake up grumpy and happily went back to sleep when we returned home from the airport.

Day 17: First solo flight

This is the face I make when it's too sunny
Our plan to hide out indoors until the next well-baby check didn't happen. Today, Brandt and I made our first trip out without Danny. Before now, I've driven with Dan sitting in the middle back seat so he can monitor the baby. Of course Brandt falls asleep as soon as we get in the car so there's not much to monitor, but we feel best travelling in this manner.
Today Brandt and I hit Whole Foods, Babies "R" Us, and Trader Joe's. Brandt slept the entire time and the trip was without incident. "Without incident" is saying a lot considering how people drive here. Today was the first time I've driven anywhere *without* nearly being hit by someone running a red light or making an illegal u-turn or cutting across four lanes of traffic with his eyes closed. The closest Brandt came to waking up was glaring through his closed eyes the two times I aimed him the wrong direction and the sun hit his face.

Day 16: Baby hair

Round and round
Brandt has the cutest swirl of hair. His hair is the same color as Dan's hair, but I guess there's a chance it will all fall out only to come back another color (called "telogen effluvium"'d think they'd give it a cuter name). Since Dan started out with white hair and everyone in my family besides me started with blonde hair, my guess is it *will* all fall out and come back a bit lighter. Funny that I'm the only one in the family with the blonde hair now ;)
